Microbiology culture media supplements

Powdered microbiological media are mixtures of dehydrated nutrients such as agar, peptones, carbohydrates, salts, growth factors, and selective/differential agents, which are reconstituted with sterile water to produce solid or liquid culture media.

The basic culture media formulation therefore includes a wide range of nutrients and substances, but in some cases the addition of supplements is required to enrich the medium or make it selective or differential. These supplements are often heat-sensitive and cannot be included in the base medium.

Examples of supplements include antibiotics, bile salts, crystal violet, pH indicators, or protective agents such as Tween 80, starch, or charcoal.
