Animal blood for microbiology

The most commonly used animal blood in microbiology is sheep or lamb blood and horse or rabbit blood.

Applications

  • Bacterial identification: The addition of blood to culture media allows the determination of typical hemolytic reactions of various microorganisms (alpha, beta, gamma hemolysis).

  • Nutrition: Defibrinated blood provides a source of nutrients for many bacterial species, especially the most fastidious ones.
