It is suitable for all types of microorganisms in a variety of matrices.

Samples contained in a microtube undergo alkaline lysis in the absence of chaotropic agents, but with a combination of resins that retain various organic molecules and ions that could affect DNA quality. In the final step, the sample is resuspended with a pH-correcting buffer containing neutralizing agents for major PCR inhibitors (e.g., humic acids) not captured by the resins.

The vital cell reagent is designed to neutralize DNA from dead cells and/or free DNA that could lead to false positives in PCR-based detection techniques. This reagent cannot penetrate intact cell membranes, which are associated with cellular viability. Results obtained from PCR on samples treated with the reagent indicate the presence of viable cells.
